The conference focused on the types of training
being done in Iran, but where the fighters are being sent, what is involved in
the training and the names of those commanders who are currently involved in
the training camps. In addition, using satellite imagery, the NCRI showed the
locations of the training camps within Iran.
These training camps demonstrate that Iran is
exporting terrorism by training cells and dispatching them around the world,
but focusing their efforts on the Middle East and unstable countries, such as
Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
The NCRI compiled their report using information
from the social network of the PMOI/MEK within Iran. The PMOI/MEK (People’s
Mojahedin Organization of Iran) was formed in 1965 and is the largest and more
organized Iranian opposition movement. It is the main component of the
coalition, National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). The MEK has been key
in gathering intelligence about what is really going on within Iran,
particularly in regards to human rights issues and the regime’s nuclear
activities.
The result is that the group has also been the
main focus of the Iranian regime’s repression efforts. The Iranian lobby has
also worked hard to smear the MEK’s reputation within the international
community. Despite these efforts, including attempting to have the MEK declared
a terrorist organization and a cult, the movement has gained international
support as an alternative to the current Iranian regime.
